Who we are:
The FIAO is a non-profit, Tax Exempt 501© (3), Community Servicing Organization encompassing 33 diverse, distinct and individual Italian ethnic, fraternal, political, religious and social organizations. Their origins are from diverse regions of Italy.
The Federation was formed in 1971, as a tangible answer to the rising needs of the Italian-American community. The borough had undergone a deep evolution as a consequence of the changes in the status and character of the Italian community. The FIAO represented a unique concept of uniting social clubs into one cohesive group transforming these smaller individual groups into a significant political and social organization. As a result of this union, the entire Italian-American civic community would become fully conscious and informed of their individual rights guaranteed by the American Constitution and would have a collective voice on issues affecting the community. The FIAO hoped to accomplish these goals while still maintaining their past traditions and the culture of their ancestral land.
The founding members hoped to share these traditions with other local communities and endeavored to learn more about other ethnic cultures living in our community.
The Federation of Italian American Organizations of Queens, assists hundreds of individuals and families each year.
Through voluntary support of Member Organizations, competitive public funding, grants and other charitable contributions, FIAO provides services, activities, and community events that help individuals, families and the the Queens community regardless of race, creed, color, or religion, to help them achieve their fullest potential in today's challenging times.
Our community service office is staffed with supportive professionally trained multi-lingual personnel.
